Dear Band Family, This year, the Morehead High School Band Department is planning to take a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the purpose of competing in the 2016 Fiesta-Val Music Festival. The band will compete in the following categories: 1. Concert Band (Definite) 2. Jazz Band (Definite) 3. Marching Band (Definite) 4. Color Guard (Pending Student Interest Level, Minimum 8 committed participants needed to secure competition spot) 5. Indoor Drum Line (Pending Student Interest Level, minimum 12 committed participants needed to secure competition spot) The purpose of this festival is to provide the entirety of our band membership with an opportunity to compete at a national level festival against other high schools in the aforementioned areas. It will also provide our students with an enriching performance and educational experience, as our band will have the opportunity to participate in an adjudicated clinic and work with collegiate level band directors and music educators. Performances will take place at Myrtle Beach on Friday, April 29th and Saturday, April 30th. On Friday, April 29th the band will compete in the areas of Concert Band and Jazz Band. Each Band will play one warm-up piece and two selections for adjudication. On Saturday, April 30th the band will participate in a parade competition on Ocean Boulevard. The Marching Band will perform a traditional march for this competition. Indoor drum line and color guard will also perform on Saturday (Exact times to be determined). The awards ceremony will be held at the “Palace Theater” Saturday, April 30th at 3PM.
Cost: As previously stated on page 1, the purpose of this trip is to provide every member of our band department with the chance to compete at a national level. This gives us a specific goal for all branches of our band program as well as providing a unique and beneficial educational experience. In years past, students participating in the Morehead High School Band Program have been required to pay fees for each branch of the band in which they were active participants. This year we are not charging a fee for spring semester ensembles. The total cost for this 3 day/2 night trip will be a maximum of $285.00*(see notation below) per person. This cost includes the following:
1. 2 night stay at Compass Cove Oceanfront Resort 2. Full American breakfast on Friday and Saturday 3. Awards Banquet with dinner on Saturday 4. Festival Cost 5. Festival T-Shirt 6. Festival Flag 7. 1 dinner on Friday 8. 1 lunch on Saturday 9. Transportation Cost (Charter Buses 3695.00 per bus. 55 seats per bus. We anticipate needing 2 buses*(see notation below). Students will only need additional money for their own use, such as fast food, souvenirs, etc. *NOTE: The more people that attend/commit to this festival, the lower the overall cost will be. The maximum cost per participant as of this date is listed above at $285.00. We have started a “Go Fund Me” page for donations ( https://www.gofundme.com/h9j2ru3w ), and are also seeking assistance in the area of transportation (Charter buses seat 55 people per bus). It is possible for the price to drop significantly if we receive sufficient donations and the level of commitment and interest is high. We will be starting fundraising programs soon and all students and parents are encouraged to participate. Proceeds gained from individual fundraisers will be used specifically for this trip.
Itinerary Example Note: This is not the final itinerary. It is merely a “look” at what our trip “could” look like. It is possible that the cost could drop from the maximum price of $285.00 listed on the previous pages. REHEARSAL SCHEDULE 1. Concert Band: No after-school rehearsals will be required for Concert Band.
2. Jazz Band:
Jazz Band will rehearse every Tuesday from 4PM to 5PM.
3. Marching Band: We will hold a “mini band camp” for the parade competition practice in the months of March and April. All students who play an instrument in the band program are encouraged to participate (in other words, the parade band is open to students who participate in the Jazz and Concert programs). Students from first semester are welcome to perform. Adequate coverage on all parts will be needed to perform effectively. NOTE: PARADE MARCHING IS EASY! It is literally “STRAIGHT AHEAD”. There are no slides, backwards marching, back flips or martial arts required. We will march to “Washington Post”, which we will also use as a warm-up for concert band. I encourage all students enrolled in a band class to participate. If you are someone in the band program who is fearful of marching you shouldn’t be. This competition will only require forward marching and turns. I did it in high school with no prior experience and it worked out fine! In fact, it was fun. 4. Drum Line:
Exact time to be determined once exact number of participants has been determined. A minimum of 12 participants are needed.
5. Color Guard Exact time to be determined once exact number of participants has been determined. A minimum of 8 participants are needed. SEE PROCEEDING PAGES FOR A SCHEDULE OF THE SPRING SEMESTER. PLEASE NOTE: This schedule does not include GUARD and DRUM LINE REHEARSALS (Still pending student commitment and interest to determine if we will compete in those areas). This schedule also does not include interest meetings for the 2016-2017 fall marching band season or clinics and mini-camps for 8th graders. A 2016-2017 schedule will be released later this semester. Additional booster/parent meetings will be scheduled in advance as needed to provide updates regarding all aspects of the Myrtle Beach trip and the band program. This schedule DOES include the spring concert date for concert band. The date for jazz band will be announced at a later date. FEBRUARY
